Democrat Ad Highlights Romney Flip-Flops on Abortion, Health Care

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney may not have received the endorsement of New Hampshire’s leading newspaper, but the Democrat National Committee still sees him as the man to beat next November and their campaign to define how Americans view Romney is now taking shape.

The ad campaign is scheduled to run television ads on broadcast and cable stations in six markets that cover key swing states. The markets chosen for the campaign are Washington, D.C., Raleigh-Durham, N.C., Pittsburgh, Pa., Albuquerque, N.M., and Columbus, Ohio.

Key insiders in both the Democrat and Republican Parties both believe that in spite of Romney’s lackluster campaign and his inability to break away from the current pack of GOP candidates, he is still the most likely candidate to secure the Republican nomination. The goal, key Democrats suggest, is to begin to define Romney to a national audience.

Highlights of the four-minute ad focus on Romney’s seemingly contradictory statements on abortion and health care and emphasize the headline, “the story of two men trapped in one body.”

“Mitt Romney, unparalleled flip-flopper, has proved he is his own toughest opponent on the issues,” the website MittvMitt.com says. “The one thing Mitt and Mitt can agree on? That they want to be president – so Romney will say and do whatever it takes to get elected, no matter how contradictory.”

“Who is this guy, can you trust him,” a female voice says at the beginning of the ad. The clip uses a series of clips from Romney and various news journalists who have drawn attention to Romney’s changing positions. For example, “he was pro-choice, now he’s pro-life,” a female news commentator says. Other issues such as climate change, unions and taxes are also mentioned in the ad.

Although this isn’t the first time Democrats have targeted Romney in a national campaign, this is by far the biggest buy they have made, but the DNC refused to disclose the specific dollar amount of the buy. In response, the Romney campaign issued a press release called “Obama vs. Obama.

“President Obama will say and do anything to hold on to power,” spokeswoman Andrea Saul said in a statement. “Despite what he said he would do for the middle class, President Obama has failed to create a single net new job and has wreaked more havoc on the middle class than any president in modern history.”

Romney has consistently led the GOP field in national polls, particularity in New Hampshire, where his campaign has focused the majority of their efforts in hopes of securing a huge victory before moving to primaries in the southern states.

However, in what many analysts viewed as a surprise, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich received the endorsement of the New Hampshire Union Leader in a front-page editorial on Sunday.
