Ellen DeGeneres' New Sitcom Causes Stir, Will One Million Moms Protest?
Ellen DeGeneres is entering her 10th year as a talk-show host but will soon be busy producing a new half-hour sitcom for NBC. It would be the third time DeGeneres has been involved with a regular sitcom since working on "Ellen" for four years, and "The Ellen Show" for one.
Right now the series does not have an official name, nor a specific plot line, but reports state that it may focus on a 32-year-old woman who becomes afraid of her future after settling down and buying her very own home. Lauren Pomerantz, who wrote for "The Ellen Show" will again write for DeGeneres and co-produce the new series.
DeGeneres will not stop working on her Emmy-award-winning talk show, which has just kicked off its 10th season. In addition to dancing, trolling Facebook and Twitter, DeGeneres has used her show to discuss serious issues with politicians including John McCain, President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.
She is a popular figure, with over 13 million followers on Twitter and a huge following nationwide. Yet that has not always been the case. After coming out on "The Oprah Winfrey Show," DeGeneres received a huge backlash and retreated for some time. Her show, "Ellen" began declining in the ratings and was eventually canceled.
It wasn't until 2003 that she found her true niche in the talk-show arena. Her show was an immediate success and helped launch her career to new heights. In addition to hosting her own series, DeGeneres guest-starred on "American Idol" as a judge but quit after one year, saying that the show "didn't feel like the right fit for me."
DeGeneres has been the target of such organizations as One Million Moms, who protested her being named a spokeswoman for J.C. Penney. The company defended its decision to hire DeGeneres, and eventually One Million Moms dropped their protest.
There's been no word yet whether the organization will protest DeGeneres' new show.
