Jerry Sandusky Penn State Scandal: President of Sandusky Charity Resigns

The president of The Second Mile, the charity founded by former Penn State University defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky who is being charged with sexually abusing eight boys, has resigned.

Dr. Jay Raykovitz, the CEO of the charity for 28 years, resigned Sunday, leaving vice-chairman David Woodle in charge of day-to-day operations.

"I have submitted, and the Board has accepted, my resignation as President/CEO of The Second Mile," said Raykovitz in a statement. "Providing any statement beyond that sentence takes the focus from where it should be - on the children, young adults and families who have been impacted. Their pain and their healing is the greatest priority, and my thoughts and prayers have been and will continue to be with them."

Raykovitz's resignation is just one of the many that have occurred in the past week following the sex scandal looming over Penn State University.

School administrators have come under fire for allegedly knowing about the sex abuse but failing to take action to stop it. Penn State Athletic Director Tim Curley and Gary Schultz, senior vice president for business and finance, resigned from their positions last Monday and face perjury charges for allegedly lying to a grand jury and failing to take action after the abuse was brought to their attention by various witnesses.

Head football coach Joe Paterno planned to retire at the end of the season, but the university fired him for not going to the police after then graduate assistant Mike McQueary brought it to his attention that he had seen Sandusky showering with a young boy. Although Paterno fulfilled his legal obligation by alerting his supervisor, Curley, of the incident, the coach has been criticized by many for not doing enough or taking further action beyond his superiors.

Paterno's firing sparked outrage among Penn State's student body and members of the community who felt it was not Paterno's responsibility to do more than he did. McQueary, now a receivers coach, has been placed on indefinite paid administrative leave.

Raykovitz said in an earlier statement that he was aware of the allegations being made against Sandusky back in 2002, but was told by Curley that an investigation concluded there was nothing to substantiate the allegation that Sandusky was seen in the showers with a young boy.

Many are left to question the future of The Second Mile, as supporters have been distancing themselves from the charity since the sex scandal broke.
