Lauryn Hill Gives Birth to Child Number Six
Lauryn Hill, the former “Fugees” singer welcomed her sixth child on Saturday after a frightening delivery. The umbilical cord was wrapped around the neck of the infant, but a report on the “Black Celeb Kids” website indicates that mother and child are doing well.
Hill, 36, has five elder children with the son of reggae legend Bob Marley- Rohan Marley.
There is speculation about the paternity of the newest addition to Hill’s family. Marley responded to Houston Chronicle’s question about Hill’s pregnancy with a tweet implying that he is not the father: “2 things… I’m not married and I don’t have anyone expecting anything.”
The Houston Chronicle journalist then asked, “So we are clear. 1.) You’re not married to your ex-wife or Lauryn, and 2.) She isn’t preggo w/ your child, but someone else’s?”
Marley replied, “That is correct until I say out of my mouth to the contrary.”
But shortly after, Marley tweeted, “I got to be more careful about who I engage in a little conversation they’ll twist your words into their own meanings.”
The 39-year-old has been in a relationship with Hill for 15 years, but rumors have flared about an affair with Brazilian model Isabeli Fontana.
Marley denied the rumors with a tweet, “Ms. Hill is the mother of my children, whom I have a tremendous amount of love and respect for. I would never do that.”
In response to Hill’s delivery Saturday, Marley tweeted, “I am forwarding all well wishes to Ms. Hill on the birth of her new son. I’m sure she’ll appreciate the love being sent to her.”
Representatives of Hill have not responded to media requests for comment about the paternity of her child.
In 1998, “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” launched the artist into a solo career that earned her five Grammy Awards. After the success of her album, she disappeared from the public view, said to have been disappointed in fame and the music industry.
Four years after her debut album, Hill recorded a live performance of “deeply personal songs” and released “MTV’s Unplugged 2.0”.
On December 13, 2003, Hill gave a Christmas benefit at the Vatican, and made headlines by denouncing “corruption, exploitation, and abuses.”
In reference to the molestation of boys by Catholic priests, Hill read a prepared statement in front of 7,500 people that accused Catholic Church officials of covering up the incidents.
Hill told the crowd, “I am sorry if I am about to offend some of you. I did not accept my invitation to celebrate with you the birth of Christ. Instead I ask you why you are not in mourning for Him in this place?”
Hill proceeded to urge the crowd to “not seek blessings from man but from God” and for Church leaders to ask for forgiveness.
“Holy God is a witness to the corruption of your leadership, of the exploitation and abuses which are the minimum that can be said for the clergy. There is no acceptable excuse to defend the Church,” said Hill.
Both Columbia Records and the Vatican declined to issue an official statement pertaining to Hill’s speech, and the segment was omitted from the television broadcast.
Pope John Paul II was not present, but high-ranking Church officials including Cardinals Camillo Ruini and Edmund Szoka attended the event. The Catholic League said of Hill, “pathologically miserable” and that her career was “in decline”, according to Poynter Online.
Days later, Hill responded to the controversy saying, “What I said was the truth… What I asked was the Church to repent for what has happened,” according to IMDB.
More recently, Hill has released mix tapes and has been seen performing at music festivals, but still largely avoids public exposure.
