Local Atlanta Church to Turn Missile Base Into Evacuee Shelter

South Georgia’s Life Christian Center International has leased Worth County’s old Nike missile base to renovate it into a shelter for Katrina victims.

In the state of Georgia, the American Red Cross reported assisting 14,000 evacuees last week, with about 1,500 of the storm victims staying in the 17 Red Cross shelters across Georgia, according to the Associated Press. Other evacuees are staying at motels, churches, or with friends and relatives.

Life Christian Center member Renee Boyett expressed gratitude at being able to lend a hand in the disaster relief effort.
“I’ve never had to much fun doing such hard work in my life,” Boyett told WLOX-TV. “I love this. It’s the best feeling ever to know that you’re helping somebody else when they’re having a crisis.”
