Mother's Day: Christian Charities Offer Alternative Gift-Giving Ideas in Honor of Moms, Benefiting the World's Poor
A number of Christian charity organizations have produced gift catalogs showing alternative gift-giving ideas as a unique way of celebrating Mother's Day. The alternative gifts, given in the name of a mother, help improve the lives of poverty-stricken children and families struggling to survive in developing countries.
"As we celebrate Mother's Day and thank God for the influence of our mothers and wives, please remember the millions of children and mothers who have never heard of Jesus, [the One] who will provide for them," exhorted Dr. K.P. Yohannan, president of Gospel for Asia, as reported by the National Religious Broadcasters.
Gospel for Asia is encouraging people to honor their mothers by supporting a Bridge of Hope child. The ministry's goal is to equip at least 2,000 children with education, meals, and the love of Christ by Mother's Day.
"Mothers tend to care deeply for their children," GFA stated, "so what better Mother's Day gift is there than giving a desperate mother in Asia the chance to see her child get an education, receive a regular medical check-up, have clean clothes and eat a daily meal?"
Compassion International and World Vision are also encouraging people to honor their mother by providing hope for mothers living in poverty around the world. World Vision explains that a gift like career training will provide help and hope for struggling mothers and their children.
Another organization, Food For The Poor, has a number of gift ideas, such as a sewing machine that could provide a poor family with the opportunity to earn income by making clothing and other textile products. The group offers a video that shows a handful of additional gift ideas for Mother's Day that can positively impact those in need.
"Forget the flowers that are destined to fade, and choose to honor Mom with a heartfelt gift from the charity's catalog," the organization encouraged.
Other charity groups with gift catalogs include Buckner International, Samaritan's Purse, and Wycliffe Bible Translators.
