Muslim Brotherhood Using Violence to Destroy Social Peace by Attacking Copts, Says Evangelical Coptic Authority Chairperson
Rev. Radi Atallah, chairperson of the Evangelical Coptic Authority's regional committee on dialogue of cultures, has said the Muslim Brotherhood is trying to destroy social peace in Egypt by using public violence and violence against Copts.
Rev. Atallah pointed out that Salafis are the other face of the Muslim Brotherhood, and it had become apparent that their goal is to crack Egyptian unity and disrupt the transitional period.
"The violence is part of the literature of the Muslim Brotherhood. This group is trying to destroy social peace and live in a blood bath. The Muslim Brotherhood is a threat to the community and to its own members," Atallah told Mideast Christian News.
He added that the group has lost its popularity after Egyptian society rejected its rule. Rev. Atallah believed that the violence carried out by the group is a result of its many mistakes after losing power.
Rev. Atallah pointed out that the Muslim Brotherhood was targeting Copts secretly, but now their attacks on Copts are public. He pointed out that minorities such as Christians always pay the price of societal change and that Copts have become accustomed to being pressured by the Muslim Brotherhood.
He added that the Muslim Brotherhood and their supporters are trying to show the weakness of the ruling powers in Egypt and their inability to protect Copts.
It is worth mentioning that sporadic acts of violence have occurred against Copts in a number of Egyptian governorates, especially in Upper Egypt and Sinai. These occurrences followed the armed forces' decision to remove President Mohamed Morsi based on the demands of millions of Egyptian protesters.
An Orthodox priest was killed and a Copt was beheaded in Sinai. Four more Copts were killed and 23 Coptic houses were burned in the village of Dabeya, Luxor (Upper Egypt), while Copts also experienced attacks and threats in other governorates.
