Thanksgiving Weather Forecast for Travelers Includes Extreme Weather Warnings
As Thanksgiving and the weekend following it are approaching fast, those planning longer trips should be mindful of the upcoming weather warnings in some parts of the United States, including heavy rain and possible snowstorms.
Severe thunderstorms are expected to develop Tuesday afternoon between western Tennessee, through Mississippi to Louisiana and the coast of Texas, according to the National Weather Service. In addition, "damaging winds" are possible along the coastal ranges of Oregon and Washington Tuesday, as well as through Wednesday evening, the agency said.
On Wednesday through Thursday, showers and thunderstorms will develop from Georgia to the central Gulf Coast, meteorologists say. There is a potential for rain or snow on Wednesday in the Northeast.
Weather.com confirmed snow for those spending their holidays in northern New England and northern Upstate New York. As much as 6 to 12 inches of snow could end up covering that area, experts say.
Thursday, Thanksgiving day, is expected to offer nice, sunny weather in the East, but rain and mountain snow in the Pacific Northwest, as well as in California and parts of the Desert Southwest.
Temperatures will drop nationwide, according to the National Weather Service.
Friday will bring rain and thunderstorms late in the day. The hazardous weather will cover the area from the Upper Mississippi Valley to Texas, according to Weather.com. Some snow is expected in the Rockies.
Though experts are hesitant about predicting the weekend weather, Weather.com said meteorologists expect "unsettled weather conditions" and travel problems over portions of the central and eastern states.
Rain and thunderstorms are possible from the Great Lakes to the Mississippi and Ohio Valleys southward into the Southeast, meteorologists predict. Snow or sleet could develop from the Midwest to as far south as portions of the Mid-South.
