George Whitefield dies – Sept. 30, 1770
This week marks the anniversary of the death of George Whitefield, the renowned 18th-century British revivalist preacher who helped launch the First Great Awakening, in America.
A noted traveling evangelist, Whitefield delivered what would become his final sermon the day before his death in Exeter, New Hampshire. The crowd was so large that the event had to be moved outdoors.

“In one year, Whitefield traveled 5,000 miles through America, preaching more than 350 times as he traversed the nation from North to South,” PBS People & Ideas noted.
Whitefield played a key role in igniting the Great Awakening, a significant religious revival that became the first major mass movement in American history.
