Trump-Musk backed candidate loses, voter ID wins: 5 highlights from Wis., Fla. election results
1. Former Planned Parenthood attorney elected as Wisconsin Supreme Court justice
Unofficial results from Decision Desk HQ show Susan Crawford securing 55% of the vote against Brad Schimel in the election for a seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court. While the candidates are officially nonpartisan, liberals and conservatives had their preferred candidates in the race.
Crawford was the preferred candidate of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin, while Schimel, the state’s former Republican attorney general, was favored by President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk, who leads the Department of Government Efficiency.
Crawford’s victory preserves the current makeup of the Wisconsin Supreme Court as identified by the advocacy group Alliance for Justice, with four justices affiliated with Democrats and liberals and the remaining three aligned with Republicans and conservatives. Crawford replaces the Democrat-aligned Justice Ann Walsh Bradley, whose term is set to expire.
Crawford hasn't shied away from her progressive credentials. The candidate’s website highlights her experience as a “private practice attorney, where she protected voting and workers’ rights, and represented Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin to defend access to [abortion].”
Meanwhile, Schimel’s website warns of the implications of what would happen “if the left wins in April.” Schimel expressed concern that continued liberal control of the Wisconsin Supreme Court will “end parental rights, eliminate school choice, overturn right to work, remove voter ID, cost taxpayers millions of dollars, turn their backs on law enforcement, and force biological males into girls’ bathrooms.”
