What If Jesus Came to Your Home?
You hear a knock on your door. You go to see who it is only to discover the Lord Jesus Christ standing there. Would you open the door? Would you let Him in? Or would you pretend you're not home? (as if the Lord didn't know better)
Christianity involves more than doctrine. At the center of the whole thing is a Person. And not just any person, but the very One who created the earth and created man. (see Col. 1:15-17)
So if the Creator desired to meet with you, would you do it? You say, "But I don't believe Jesus is the Creator." OK. But say you did. Would you let Him inside?
And even if you don't believe Jesus is the Creator, what about the facts of His life, death, resurrection, and millions of followers over the past 2000 years? Wouldn't that make you at least a little interested in talking with Him?
You say, "But I don't believe Jesus rose from the dead." OK. But say you did. Would you then want to have a conversation with the Lord?
Imagine living on earth 2000 years ago. There were plenty of people who walked right next to the Messiah. They touched Him, and ate with Him, and conversed with Him. And He healed many of them, and inspired His disciples to spread His message to the world.
If Jesus had not risen from the dead, it would have been very easy for His opponents to produce His body. No ragtag team of Christ followers would have been able to pull off such a hoax and get away with it. And even if they could have done it, do you honestly believe they would have then gone on to die as martyrs for a faith which they knew was a lie? Not a chance.
Jesus lived, died and rose again. That's history. Those are the facts. And it's also a fact that the Lord has been coming to the "door of man's heart" ever since. He does this because only He can forgive man's sin and only He can bring man into a right relationship with the Father in heaven. This is why Jesus is called "the mediator of a new covenant." (Hebrews 12:24)
And this mediator is interested in meeting with you in your real home. That is to say, the home that extends far beyond anything man can make. Your real home is your heart. The real you is eternal. And the greatest need of your soul is to have eternal security in Christ.
I saw a photograph the other day of some homes in Malibu, California, which are close to being washed out to sea. The headline read, "Malibu Billionaires Helpless as Million Dollar Homes Erode into Ocean." You see, every house on earth will eventually be destroyed. And no one wants to be in a house when it gets destroyed. There is no security in that sort of thing.
And as much as people do to make their earthly home a "dream home," the fact remains that it won't last. It won't provide satisfaction forever. Things in this world wear out and break down. But not your soul. It will never "wear out." It will exist forever. You will exist forever. And the day is quickly approaching when you will know why Jesus knocked on the door of your heart.
Don't you think your Creator can see clearly into your future? Don't you think He knows what you need not only today, but also 25 years from now? How about 100 years from now? Where do you plan to be at that time?
Sin has a way of eroding man's desire to connect with Jesus. Like those homes on the beach in Malibu, the heart of man is being constantly threatened by the waves of sin and death all around us. Oh we can do a decent job of ignoring the obvious. At least until it's staring us right in the face. And by that time, there is no getting around the fact that structures in this world which seemed so stable are beginning to collapse. It happens with homes, and with all possessions, but most of all, with a person's physical body. These bodies eventually wear out and die. Then what?
Jesus saw the end from the beginning. He sees that your greatest need is to have your sins forgiven. Only then can you truthfully say, "It is well with my soul." Only Christ can give a person eternal security and a beautiful eternal home in paradise.
This is why Jesus is at the door of your heart today. And it's why He is knocking. He desires to come inside and talk with you. He wants to forgive your sins, and He wants to be the leader of your soul. Your Lord, your God, your everything.
Will you open the door? Will you invite Him inside? Or will you pretend you're not home?
The Lord who created the world can see through buildings. And He can see through the motives of man. The Lord sees exactly why you and I do what we do and why we choose to receive Him, or reject Him.
Those who turn away from Christ are left to exist all alone inside the home of their soul. Meanwhile, the waves keep pounding. The erosion continues. And the clock is ticking.
If that's not enough to get you to open the door of your heart to Jesus, you might be one of those who never do so. You know, one of those who "stick it out to the end" as their home collapses into the ocean of eternity.
So do you want to go through life on earth with Jesus, and then into eternity with Him? Or would you rather go it alone? That's the million dollar question for every soul. And it's why Jesus is knocking on the door of your heart at this very hour.
