Jerry Kill Seizure: Minnesota Coach Released From Hospital
Minnesota's defensive coordinator gave an update on Jerry Kill's seizure on Sunday, saying the coach has been released from the hospital after suffering a seizure late Saturday afternoon.
Kill suffered a seizure in the locker room following a postgame news conference after a 21-13 loss to Northwestern. An ambulance and medial team immediately attended to him at the TCF Bank Stadium. He was admitted to a nearby hospital where he was "alert and resting comfortably," according to a school news release on Saturday.
On Sunday, Tracy Claeys, defensive coordinator at Minnesota, told reporters that Kill's seizure was minor and that he has been released from the hospital. According to Claeys, Kill could to return to coaching as early as this afternoon. The defensive coordinator said that if Kill hadn't suffered a seizure in public, he wouldn't have gone to the hospital in the first place.
Kill has suffered a series of seizures after being diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2005. His cancer is now in remission. The 51-year-old suffered several seizures last season, the most severe one during a loss to New Mexico State in September left him hospitalized for days.
The Gopher coach has been resilient against his condition and been persistent in getting back to the game after each episode. He hasn't miss a game for the Gophers so far.
"When you have a situation where you go down and go unconscious, there's not a whole lot you can do about it," said Kill after one of last year's seizure, "until you come conscious, then you get up and go to practice."
Kill's condition has inspired him to start the Coach Kill Cancer Fund foundation to assist low-income southern Illinois residents with treatment.
