2011 American Music Awards Tonight: What to Expect

The 39th American Music Awards have scheduled top performances for Sunday’s show including Drake, Nicki Minaj, and the recently split Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony.

Performing separately, the parents of 3-year-old twins Emme and Max continue to do business together. Lopez and Anthony’s reality television talent competition, “Q’VIVA The Chosen,” is set to air in 21 countries through Latin America next year.

“I’m super excited 4 the AMAs!! Big announcement next week,” wrote Lopez on Twitter last week about her upcoming performance. “Have you voted yet??”

Justin Bieber, Kelly Clarkson, Christina Aguilera, and Chris Brown will also take to the stage to perform during the awards ceremony tonight.

British singing sensation Adele is up for four AMA’s tonight, but will not be in attendance due to throat surgery from which she is still recovering. The 23-year-old is up for Female Artist, Adult Contemporary Artist, Artist of the Year, and Favorite Album with “21” – the best-selling album in the U.S. this year.

Nominated for three awards tonight, The Band Perry will perform a song from their self-titled debut album.

Also claiming three AMA nods is Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Lil Wayne, and Taylor Swift. Following close behind with two nominations each is Beyonce, LMFAO, Kanye West, and a performer tonight- Bruno Mars.

Tonight’s numerous performances will also see Katy Perry, Gym Class Heroes, Enrique Iglesias, OneRepublic, among many others.

Tonight’s awards show, started five years ago by musician and producer Larry Klein, does not have a host. The awards were created for television and selected by music fans and enables artists to come together in pairings, such as tonight’s Pitbull and Marc Anthony singing “Rain Over Me.”

In another unique pairing, Maroon 5 will sing “Moves Like Jagger” alongside Christina Aguilera.

The 2011 AMA’s will air live from L.A.’s Nokia Theatre on ABC tonight at 8 p.m. EST.
