3. First female bishop of DC diocese

Before she made national headlines for her sermon directed at Trump, Budde made history in November 2011 when she became the first female diocesan bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington.

Budde, then aged 52, had been elected the ninth bishop of the diocese in June of that year, having previously served as the rector for St. John’s Episcopal Church of Minneapolis, Minnesota.

She succeeded the Rt. Rev. John Bryson Chane, who had served as bishop of the District of Columbia-based regional body since June 2002.

As part of the consecration ceremony, Budde was officially examined by Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori, the first female head of The Episcopal Church.
