CP World Report: Democratic Convention, Pakistan Blasphemy Case, Syria, Franklin Graham

At The Democratic National Convention's Black Caucus meeting yesterday, hundreds of delegates and volunteers geared up for the type of on-the-ground campaigning it will take within the black community to keep Obama in the White House. An NBC/ Wall Street Journal poll released last month showed Obama has 94% support from black voters. But the fear is…they may not vote, being let down by a President who promised them change. Another problem is the traditionally Republican swing state of North Carolina, where some black Pastors have been speaking out against Obama since he announced his support for same sex marriage right after the State's ban.

The 11 year old Christian girl who was arrested for blasphemy in Pakistan may be closer to freedom after police detained a Muslim cleric on suspicion of planting evidence to frame her. Rimsha Masih was accused of burning pages of the Koran, but witnesses are saying the cleric tore pages out of the Koran and planted them in Rimsha's bag beside burned papers. Rimsha's arrest has caused global outrage. And even if she is released from jail, she may be in danger if she returns to her village. Some of her Muslim neighbors are insisting on her punishment and calling the detained Imam a victim.

The Syrian regime has refused all dialogue with the opposition, saying they must first crush the rebels. Activists reported that August was the bloodiest month since the uprising began in March 2011. Evangelist Franklin Graham has agreed to hold an evangelistic event in the violence ridden country of South Sudan next month, answering a plea from churches in the region. They believe their only hope is a spiritual revival. South Sudan declared independence a little more than a year ago and it appears to be on the brink of a full scale war with Sudan. Graham says persecution is the worst in Sudan where 2 million people have been murdered over the last 20 years. Churches have been burned; pastors have been nailed to trees, among other unspeakable crimes by the soldiers of the Islamic Republic of Sudan. Graham's evangelistic crusade in South Sudan is scheduled for Oct. 26th.

Former U.S. President George W. Bush and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair should be tried as war criminals. Those words come from Desmond Tutu, the former Anglican Archbishop of South Africa. He was referring to the invasion of iraq in 2003. And Tutu compares Blair and Bush to Robert Mugabe, the Zimbabwean leader who led his nation's decline while accumulating personal wealth, and al Qaeda Osama bin Laden. In a response, Blair pointed out that Iraq today has an economy three times or more in size with child mortality rate cut by a third of what it wasunder Hussein. Desmond Tutu also labels Israel an apartheid state.
