Katie Holmes Has Awkward Halloween Encounter With 'Free Katie' Shirts

Katie Holmes was reportedly left red-faced during a dinner outing on Saturday after being seated next to fellow diners who were dressed up in the actress' honor for Halloween.

While dining at Mr. Chow in New York City, a random group of diners allegedly wore "Free Katie" and "Save Suri" t-shirts while others dressed up as Holmes, 33, her daughter Suri, 6, and even her ex-husband Tom Cruise, 50. Holmes and Suri were reportedly attempting to enjoy quiet meals despite being seated directly next to the Halloween enthusiasts.

"When they sat down, [the group] exchanged an awkward glance with Katie, but she kept her cool and didn't say anything," an alleged onlooker told The New York Post. "The embarrassed Halloween crew quickly covered up the costumes before Suri got a chance to take a look."

Holmes, who was married to Cruise for five years, reportedly blindsided the actor in June when she served him with divorce papers. For years, fans had speculated that actress was being controlled by Cruise, particularly after reports emerged that she had cut ties with her parents over their rumored objection to her union with the actor.

Martin and Kathleen Holmes, who are devout Catholics, reportedly objected to their daughter marrying Cruise because of his deep-rooted involvement with Scientology. They eventually came around out of fear that Cruise would permanently jeopardize the relationship that they have with Holmes, their youngest child.

Holmes reportedly grew tired of Cruise's controlling ways, which prompted her to file for divorce. He allegedly made every major and minor decision in her personal and professional life, according to TMZ.com.

It was previously claimed that Cruise often placed bizarre restrictions on Holmes, particularly with regards to her acting career. More recently it was reported that the "Rock of Ages" star made plans to send Suri to a radical Scientology Organization (known as the Sea Org), according to the entertainment site.

Fans of the actress began creating "Free Katie" and "Save Suri" themed fan pages on social networking sites during the course of her marriage in protest.
