6 things to know about Jay Bhattacharya, Trump's pick to lead the National Institutes of Health
Censored by Twitter
The publication of "The Twitter Files" in the weeks after billionaire Elon Musk bought the social media platform in 2022 revealed Bhattacharya as one of several individuals who found themselves subject to blacklists by employees of the company because of views they considered unfavorable.
Bari Weiss, the independent journalist who wrote about "Twitter's Secret Blacklists" as part of "The Twitter Files," stated that "teams of Twitter employees build blacklists, prevent disfavored tweets from trending, and actively limit the visibility of entire accounts or even trending topics — all in secret, without informing users."
Bhattacharya reacted to the news that he was on a "Trends Blacklist" in a tweet posted shortly after "The Twitter Files" were published.
"The thought that will keep me up tonight: censorship of scientific discussion permitted policies like school closures & a generation of children were hurt," he wrote.
