Biden faces bipartisan pushback over threat to cut off weapons for Israel

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., told Politico earlier this week that he hoped Biden’s promise to withhold weapons from Israel was just the president having what he described as a “senior moment.” Johnson accused the president of violating the terms of a nearly $100 billion foreign aid package.
“So yesterday, I talked with Prime Minister [Benjamin] Netanyahu about it, and I wanted to get confirmation from him exactly what’s happening. And he described exactly what was happening before the news was confirmed,” Johnson said. “I went straight to the White House, and I said, ‘What gives? Somebody’s going to have to explain this to me because it’s very different than what I was told.’”

According to the House speaker, the White House told him that the delayed munitions were from “earlier weapons tranches” and had “nothing to do with the supplemental package that you all passed.”
The speaker told the outlet that he felt betrayed by the president’s statement to CNN. On Wednesday, Johnson joined Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell in sending Biden a letter demanding details about shipments to Israel.
