$99 HP TouchPad: Ice Cream Sandwich OS and Fire Sale Only Hope for Droid Bionic

Like the HP TouchPad, the Motorola Droid Bionic may soon be discontinued due to its poor sales.

RadioShack has reported that the Droid Bionic is “virtually unsellable,” while other retailers have taken the smartphone out of their stock.

The HP TouchPad saw a similar fate last summer when it was discontinued after reports of low sales.

Several retailers reduced the tablet from $499 to $99 in a remarkable fire sale that sparked an unprecedented demand.

The TouchPad began selling out in many stores and became one of the highest demanded tablets on the market.

Commentators suggest that the Droid Bionic may also see a significant price cut to garner interest from customers.

The Droid Bionic is being marketed as the alternative to a number of smartphones, including the iPhone 4S and the Samsung Galaxy S2.

Verizon Wireless, the exclusive carrier of the Bionic, forwent carrying the Galaxy S2 to market the Motorola smartphone.

“We have been assured that this is a RadioShack-only situation,” said Droid-Life, a tech website. “The device as we have been told, has no issues and will continue to be sold nationwide just as it always has been… Our source says that it is likely a software or security issue that needs to be addressed before they can begin to sell it again.”

Droid-Life also suggests RadioShack cut the price of the Bionic to unload some of its stagnant stock.

The Droid Bionic is scheduled to get an update to Android 4.0, also known as Ice Cream Sandwich, which many industry experts hope will increase customer interest in the smartphone.

The Droid Bionic features a dual-core processor, and it is 4G LTE ready.
