$99 HP TouchPad: Kobo Vox Offers Alternative for Frustrated Tablet Customers With $199 Tablet
As HP prepares to send one last shipment of TouchPads to retailers, other electronics companies are looking to cash in on HP’s continued delay by releasing their own cheap tablets. One such company is Kobo, which is planning to release its Kobo Vox device for $199.
Kobo was originally expected to release an Android-based e-reader, according to CNET, but the company thwarted those expectations by unveiling its Kobo Vox recently.
Kobo is also setting its sights on competing with Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablet since the price on the Kobo Vox was dropped from $249 to $199 to match it.

This also makes the tablet a good buy for those not willing to wait for HP to send out its last shipment of TouchPads, or who have been disillusioned by HP’s almost-complete silence on when they would be made available.
HP announced that it would be sending out one last shipment of TouchPads which were discontinued back in the summer in order to meet the “unfilled demand” on the device.
This shipment was expected to arrive sometime in October.
The 16GB TouchPad’s price dropped to $99 once it was discontinued.
This $199 Kobo Vox had its specifications leaked recently which include 8GB of internal memory, a microSD slot, a multitouch screen with 1,024x600-pixel resolution and a 800Mhz processor.
The Kobo Vox will run on Android 2.3 and is reported to weigh 14.2 ounces.
Android 2.3 offers access to 15,000 apps on its market.
CNET describes this tablet as “a more open, generic-version looking version of the Nook Color, though it is worth mentioning that the Vox comes in four versions that have Hot Pink, Lime Green, Ice Blue, or Jet Black trim colors.”
Pre-orders for the Kobo Vox start today and the device will start shipping on Oct. 28.
