Beyonce and Jay Z Go Vegan in A 'Spiritual Cleanse'

Jay Z and his equally famous wife Beyonce announced their pledge to go vegan for the next 22 days, starting this week.

The diet initiative was created by exercise physiologist Marco Borges, who is also a friend of Jay Z's. The rapper started the challenge the day before his of his 44th birthday on Dec. 4, when he also penned a note explaining his oath as being a "spiritual cleanse."

"Psychologists have said it takes 21 days to make or break a habit," Jay Z, also known as Sean Carter, wrote on his blog, Life + Times.

"On December 3rd, one day before my 44th birthday I will embark on a 22 Days challenge to go completely vegan, or as I prefer to call it, plant-based," he continued.

Jay Z went on to recall that he was first introduced to a plant-based diet by a vegan friend who suggested starting with just a vegan breakfast every day.

"It was easier on my than I thought," the rapper noted.

As for the timing, the designer for Barneys explained his reasoning for those asking "why now?"

"There's something spiritual to me about it being on my 44th birthday and the serendipity behind the number of days in this challenge; 22 (2+2=4) coupled with the fact that the challenge ends on Christmas day… It just feels right," Jay Z wrote.

It is believed that the rapper and Beyonce, whose birthday is on Sept. 4, named their daughter Blue Ivy in honor of the number four, with Ivy being a play on words to the Roman numeral for four: IV.

"So you can call it a spiritual and physical cleanse," Jay Z continued. "I will post my progress… I don't know what happens after Christmas. A semi-vegan, a full plant-based diet? Or just a spiritual and physical challenge? We'll see… Best of luck and health!"

In a post-script note, Jay Z added, "B is also joining me. I will let my friend Marco explain the benefits of a plant-based diet."
