Beyonce Should Donate Proceeds To Challenger NonProfit, Petitioners Say

Beyonce should donate 25 percent of the proceeds from her song "XO" to a nonprofit organization inspired by the Challenger aircraft that the singer used on her single.

The 32-year-old singer, caused some controversy when she used the audio from the Challenger disaster in her song, "XO." The Challenger exploded during a 1986 space mission, which is why many believe it was insensitive for Beyonce to use the audio from the space shuttle in her song.

Now, Sarah McNulty who works in the aerospace industry, has started a Care2 petition calling for Beyonce to donate 25 percent of the song's proceeds to the Challenger Learning Center.

"Challenger is one of those tragedies that is perpetually a very raw wound for everyone, especially those in the space industry, and I believe that it should never be treated as anything but," McNulty said in a statement, according to FitzGibbon Media. "It's never okay to trivialize a tragedy, but trivializing a tragedy such as Challenger, which was meant to be an inspirational mission to enlighten and inspire the nation and give us heroes to look up to, is a crime."

While the Care2 petition has garnered over 3,500 signatures at press time, Beyonce has previously spoke about her decision to use the audio from the space shuttle that resulted in seven deaths.

"My heart goes out to the families of those lost in the Challenger disaster," she told ABC News recently. "The song 'XO' was recorded with the sincerest intention to help heal those who have lost loved ones and to remind us that unexpected things happen, so love and appreciate every minute that you have with those who mean the most to you. The songwriters included the audio in tribute to the unselfish work of the Challenger crew with hope that they will never be forgotten."
