Dreadlock Girlfriend Assault: Man Arrested After Choking Girlfriend With Dreadlocks

A man in Oregon was arrested after he got into a heated argument with his girlfriend and then allegedly used his dreadlocks to try and choke the woman.

Caleb Grotberg, 32, was arrested early Monday morning after the woman, who has not been identified, gave police a description of the man, who then searched the nearby area before finding Grotberg a short while later.

Grotberg was taken into custody and was booked in the Multnomah County Jail. He is now facing charges including second degree kidnapping, attempted second degree assault, fourth degree assault, menacing and strangulation, which are all felonies in Oregon, according to KPTV.

The woman was taken to a local Portland hospital where police revealed she received treatment for several injuries, Sgt. Pete Simpson of the Portland Police Bureau told ABC News. Officials did state that they are not considering any of the woman's injuries life-threating.

"I have never heard of anybody using dreadlocks as a weapon," said Simpson. "Not to make light of a domestic violence situation, because it was terrifying, but this is a very Portland-centric type of situation."

Neighbors who heard about the incident where in disbelief that something like this could happen so close to where they live.

"It's sickening that someone could have such anger in them, strangling with their own hair? I mean strangulation period, you have a lot of anger, but it's shocking that someone like that would be on our street," Ric Leonetti, who lives close by, told KPTV.

Other neighbors were startled that even on a residential street in southeast Portland trying to call for help could fall on deaf ears.

"The scariest part of it, is that she was probably screaming and trying to get help, but no one else was around to help. It's unnerving being a woman, and knowing that could happen across the street and no one can notice," said neighbor Molly Dickinson.
