The assault occurred early Monday morning in NYC’s East Village. Police officials are investigating the assault, but said it was unclear what led to the attack.

A police spokesman said, “The victim claims to have been struck by these individuals and taken to the hospital.”

Investigations declined to comment on whether Degraw had been intoxicated.

A taxi reportedly hit the singer right after the assault. DeGraw apparently had just left his friends when he encountered the assailants.

Police have not made any arrests or determined a motive for the assault.

DeGraw’s spokeswoman said due to his injuries he would not be performing on August 12 or 13. DeGraw has been the opening act for rock bands Train and Maroon 5’s U.S. tour.

“Gavin and his family appreciate everyone’s concern at this time,” the spokeswoman said.

DeGraw’s fifth album, “Sweeter” debuts in stores September 20.
