Ice Cream Sandwich: New Operating System Due in 2012 for 7 HTC Phones

Cellphone maker HTC confirmed the first line of smartphone models to receive Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich in early 2012.

"HTC knows how excited our fans are to get their hands on Google's latest version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich, so we're thrilled today to announce the first wave of HTC phones that will receive upgrades: We can confirm the brand new HTC Vivid, on sale beginning today, is upgradeable to Ice Cream Sandwich,” announced HTC on its Facebook profile earlier today.

“In addition, Ice Cream Sandwich is coming in early 2012 to a variety of devices including the HTC Sensation, HTC Sensation XL and HTC Sensation XE, as well as the HTC Rezound, HTC EVO 3D, HTC EVO Design 4G and HTC Amaze 4G through close integration with our carrier partners,” HTC added.

More smartphone's may acquire Google's new operating system in the future.

"We're continuing to assess our product portfolio, so stay tuned for more updates on device upgrades, timing, and other details about HTC and Ice Cream Sandwich," HTC said.

Older Android smartphones not on the above list cannot handle Ice Cream Sandwich, though.

The HTC Rezound, previously codenamed the HTC Vigor, will feature Dr. Dre Beats audio capabilities. However, there is no official word on whether a pair of Beats headphones will come packaged with the smartphone.

HTC's new smartphone will also come with a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 4.3-inch HD display, 8-megapixel rear camera, 2-megapixel front facing camera, 1 GB of RAM and 4G LTE.

Verizon Wireless will be the primary carrier to sell the device. Different tiered plans for Verizon's costumer contracts will be offered. The projected retail price for the device is $250.

The HTC Rezound was previously said to be to be outfitted with Google's operating systems, Android 2.3.4 or Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread. HTC's Facebook has confirmed that the smartphone will feature the new Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system.

This HTC smartphone will grace United States shores, unlike the HTC Sensation XL that can only be found in the United Kingdom and Asia Pacific regions.

The HTC Sensation XL has a 4.7-inch WVGA display, 1.5GHz single-core processor and 16 GB of integrated storage.

HTC's other smartphone models have comparable specifications and features. Ice Cream Sandwich will be sure to upgrade them in early 2012.
