iPad 3 Release Date to Spark Apple Dominance of Tablet Market Until 2015
Research firm Gartner has predicted that global technology company leader Apple will dominate the Tablet market until at least 2015.
The current global tablet market is very strong with the firm predicting 63.6 million tablets to be sold worldwide this year, up massively from just 17.6 million units sold last year.
Apple is expected to continue its dominance in leading the tablet market, selling 73 percent of tablets worldwide this year, and reaching a total of 46.7 million.
Apple can expect to hold more than 50 percent of the market share until at least 2015.
Google’s Android platform will rise to 17.3 percent of the market, up from 14.3 percent last year. However, Android’s growth is slower than expected due to its high prices, weak user interface and limited tablet applications, according to analyst Carolina Milanesi.
Tablet sales are expected to reach 326.3 million units by 2015, according to Gartner.
Meanwhile, rumors that the new iPad 3 tablet would release this fall have been quelled by quotes taken from a report by a J.P. Morgan analyst.
News of an updated version of the the iPad 2 and its successor, the iPad 3, hitting the market this fall circulated even before the iPad 2 officially released. Some feel that this move is wholly unnecessary, as the iPad 2 has only been around since March of this year. Early reactions from customers and bloggers suggested that they were not pleased at purchasing an updated iPad within the same year as the last one.
Mark Moskowitz, J.P. Morgan analyst for All Things Digital, says that the chances of Apple releasing the iPad 3 this year are slim to none.
In a research report that was given to clients, he states, "In recent months, there has been rising investor speculation that a new iPad 3 would be launched for the holiday season. Our latest research continues to indicate that there is no such device slated for production this year.”
“There are prototypes in the supply chain related to the next-generation device, but our conversations with industry participants suggest that a new device will not be available until sometime in calendar 2012,” Moskowitz adds.
Moskowitz goes on to say, "We do not think Apple needs to be in a rush to unveil a new iPad. …The other tablet entrants have stumbled so far, and that trend-line could persist deep into 2012. Motorola Mobility and Research In Motion have been recent disappointments, and we expect more stumbles from others.”
