iPad 5 Release Date Confirmed for Oct. 22, Device to Launch with iPad Mini 2

The iPad 5 release date has been confirmed for Oct. 22.

Apple will host a media event on that date to introduce the fifth-generation iPad and the iPad mini 2. Other devices and software set to make an appearance there include the new Mac Pro and OS X Mavericks.

The event's date was confirmed by AllThingsD, a site that has been pretty reliable in the past concerning information on Apple products.

"People familiar with Apple's plans tell AllThingsD that the company will hold its next invitation-only event on Tuesday October 22," wrote the publication. The focal point of the gathering will be the latest updates to the company's iPad line, but new Mac Pro and OS X Mavericks will likely get some stage time as well, I'm told.

The Oct. 22 event was also confirmed by The Loop's Jim Darlrymple.

The iPad 5 will feature a design that is quite similar to the iPad mini. This will make it considerably thinner, lighter, and will give it smaller side bezels. It's also expected to come with the same 64-bit A7 processor as the iPhone 5S and an 8-megapixel camera.

The new iPad mini will feature this new processor, an 8-megapixel camera, and a retina display. Recent rumors point to the device being in short supply at launch time.

Other reports have point to Apple launching a second-gen iPad mini without retina due to these supply issues.

OS X Mavericks is the new operating system for Mac computers that will feature the same design as the recently rolled out iOS 7. The Mac Pro model was unveiled in the Spring of this year. Apple is likely to give updates on it during the event next week.
