Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence told a magazine that Kim Davis, a Christian clerk for Rowan county who recently spent days in jail for refusing to issue marriage certificates to same-sex couples, makes her "embarrassed to be from Kentucky."

"Don't even say her name in this house," the "Hunger Games" star told Vogue in an interview. "All those people holding their crucifixes, which may as well be pitchforks, thinking they're fighting the good fight. I grew up in Kentucky. I know how they are."

Lawrence went on to describe Davis as the "lady who makes me embarrassed to be from Kentucky."

Davis had been ordered to issue marriage licenses after a Supreme Court ruling in June legalized gay marriage across the nation, but she cited "God's authority" as the reason to defy the order. The judge ordered her arrest, and warned that any other clerk who refuses to issue licenses could also be found in contempt of court.

"God's moral law conflicts with my job duties," Davis told the judge before her arrest. "You can't be separated from something that's in your heart and your soul."

After spending six days in jail, Davis said, "I just want to give God the glory. His people have rallied and you are a strong people. We serve a living God who knows exactly where each and every one of us is at. Just keep on pressing. Don't let down. Because he is here; he is worthy; he's worthy. I love you guys. Thank you so much."

Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum has compared her with Martin Luther King Jr.

"Martin Luther King went to jail because he didn't follow the law," Santorum said in a radio interview. "There's a long precedent in America from people saying, 'You know the law has to change to accommodate what is the right thing to do.'"

"She is showing more courage and humility than just about any federal office holder in Washington," former Arkansas Republican Governor Mike Huckabee earlier said in a statement.

Kentucky Senator Rand Paul earlier said that Davis' arrest would only "harden the resolve" of traditional marriage advocates. "I think it's a real mistake [to jail Davis], and even those on the other side of the issue, I think it sets their movement back."

Lawrence said she was raised a Republican, and added, "but I just can't imagine supporting a party that doesn't support women's basic rights."

She said, "It's 2015 and gay people can get married and we think that we've come so far, so, yay! But have we? I don't want to stay quiet about that stuff."

Lawrence further expresses her opinion on the 2016 presidential election.

"My view on the election is pretty cut-and-dried: If Donald Trump is president of the United States, it will be the end of the world. And he's also the best thing to happen to the Democrats ever," she said.
