Kate Middleton Turns Down 'Vogue' for Girl Scouts
Kate Middleton has an array of opportunities to appear on magazine covers, but she has chosen "Scouting," a magazine for Scout leaders in the United Kingdom.
In next week's issue, Middleton appears on the cover as part of her work for the U.K. Scout Association. She recently announced her intention to work alongside volunteers and raise awareness of the need for Scout leaders. There are currently over 500,000 Scouts in the U.K., but many more are on a waiting list due to a shortage of leaders.
In the U.K., girls and boys are placed together in the Scout program; Middleton will join the ranks of the 40,000 girls. Reports state that she will help with Cub Scout packs (troops) as well as campsites. One royal aide told The Daily News, "Scouting very much reflects her [Kate's] own interests and hobbies, and in doing so she hopes to highlight the urgent need for more young people to volunteer their time."

Bear Grylls, Chief of the Scouts, told the magazine, "The Duchess has an incredibly busy life, which makes it all the more inspiring that she has chosen to volunteer alongside us. Over the past few years it has been our mission to make it easier for adults to give as much or as little as they are able. It is how we change society: many people doing a little bit."
As part of Middleton's work, she will be required to take the Scout Promise, which says, "I promise to do my best to do my duty to God and to the Queen, to help other people and to keep Scout Law." This pledge is nothing new for Middleton, though, who was once a Brownie when she was younger.
Middleton recently announced that she would be the patron of five charities, carrying on the royal tradition of supporting special organizations. The five she chose address issues of abuse and seek to protect and care for children. She has been named the patron of Action on Addiction, East Angila's Children's Hospices, The Art Room, and the National Portrait Gallery in addition to her work with the Scouts.
