Gaga, who had a highly successful year in 2011 due to the release of latest album Born This Way, was deemed to have had the most influence in entertainment and on culture this year.

Previous winners have included actresses Tina Fey and Betty White, and country music star Taylor Swift.

The 25-year-old singer, whose real name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, released her Born This Way album in May of 2011.

Reports show that as of November more than 8 million copies had been sold worldwide.

While a number of songs on the album have reached top 10 charts in the US, the "Born This Way" single has been recognized as the fastest selling single in iTunes history.

Entrepreneur and famed business mogul Donald Trump has reportedly taken credit for Gaga's rise to fame, according to MSN News.

Trump was recently quoted as saying that he allowed Gaga to perform during a 2008 Miss Universe Pageant, which he claims was ultimately her big break.

"So we put her on... it was live all over the United States and all over the world and the next day, nobody was talking about (the winner of) Miss Universe, everybody was talking, ‘Who was the woman, who was the entertainer? She was unbelievable,’” Trump said.

"I don’t want to say we made Lady Gaga, but she was incredible and that was her break," Trump added.

Gaga is expected to receive praise and recognition for the success of her music at the 2012 Grammy Awards in February.
