The band, formed by siblings Jesse Eduardo and Joy Huerta, took home the awards for best song and best recording for the pop ballad "Corre!" (Run), which in March 2012 became the number one song in the Billboard Latin song chart.

Jesse & Joy, who are known for their modern ballads with electronic influence, also won the golden megaphone for best contemporary pop vocal album, for their album about broken hearts "¿Con Quien Se Queda el Perro?" (Who Keeps The Dog), and for best short form video, with the music video of their song "Me voy."

Despite the fact that the Mexican duo won in three of the main categories on which Juanes was also nominated, the latter did not end up empty handed. The singer, known for hits like "A Dios le Pido" (I ask to God), and "La Camisa Negra" (The Black Shirt), obtained the awards of best album of the year and best long form music video, for his MTV Unplugged album.

Dominican singer and producer, Juan Luis Guerra won producer of the year award, also for Juanes' MTV Unplugged album.

Guerra was also nominated for the song of the year award, with his song "En El Cielo No Hay Hospital" (There Is No Hospital In Heaven), which is part of his new collection of Christian music with tropical influences, but he ultimately lost out to Jesse & Joy.

Mexican singer Carla Morrison, who is currently one of the most popular indie music performers in Mexico, took home two awards in the categories of best alternative song and best alternative album, for her song and album both entitled "Déjenme Llorar" (Let Me Cry).

Morrison stirred some controversy last month when she talked about politics during a press conference about her music and the Latin Grammy nominations. Morrison has stated her support to the movement #YoSoy132, the social network created by a group of Mexican college students who are against main stream media that supported the recently elected Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto.

During her press conference Morrison said that she would no longer accept invitations from Televisa, one of the major media companies in the country, because according to her that outlet manipulated information for political purposes during the presidential elections on which Nieto was the winner.

"My way of supporting the movement (#YoSoy132) and the fight to obtain a real democracy is not to accept the invitations that Televisa is extending to me, as that company has clearly sided for one candidate. I'm not interested on that television platform," said the singer, who was born in the northern state of Baja California.

In a previous ceremony of the Latin Grammys that took place last Wednesday, the Brazilian composer and political activist Caetano Veloso received the award for person of the year, and several artists, including Nelly Furtado, Juanes and Alejandro Sanz, paid tribute to him by singing his songs.

Also during that prior ceremony, American singer Marcos Witt obtained the award for best Christian music album, for his album "25 Concierto Conmemorativo."
