Luke Bryan Apologizes for National Anthem Gaffe: 'It Was From the Heart'

Luke Bryan's apology for his performance of the national anthem came via Twitter Wednesday, when the country music singer told his followers "he just wanted to do [his] best."

"I had a few keys words written down to insure myself that I wouldn't mess up. I just wanted to do my best. I promise it was from the heart," he tweeted.

Luke Bryan apologized for his unusual rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner, which included some words written down on his hand. While some patriotic fans at the Major League Baseball All-Star game thought he should have memorized the lyrics like others do, his checking of his watch also shocked critics.

"I did check my watch because I knew the stealth bomber would fly over 2 minutes in and I knew a started a little late," Bryan clarified via his Twitter account.

Some Americans thought Bryan's singing of the National Anthem should have been more thoroughly prepared.

"Luke Bryan apparently needed to go all 8th grade crib sheet to sing them anthem! #Comeonman" tweeted Doug Gottlieb. Others made similar jokes, comparing Bryan's palm-reading gaffe to a test-taking experience gone wrong.

"Luke Bryan sings the national anthem the way I used to take geometry tests," joked Mike Rutherford.

Bryan assured dissenters that he is every bit as patriotic as other Americans, though.

"If I offended anyone with my approach I sincerely apologize. Anytime I sing the anthem it is an honor and my heart beats out of my chest," the 35-year-old posted on Twitter. "Being part of the all star game was amazing and I look forward to the next time I can perform the anthem. Thanks y'all. Love ya."

Luke Bryan isn't the first to noticeably fumble the national anthem, and he probably won't be the last. For the 2011 Super Bowl, Christina Aguilera forgot the lyrics, and in 1990, Roseanne Barr performed perhaps the worst rendition ever- she grabbed her crotch and shrieked the song.
