Ohio voters legalize marijuana, NYC elects a Republican: 5 takeaways from the nation's election results

Voters nationwide decided the fate of several candidates seeking elected office at the state and local levels, and weighed in on politically polarizing ballot measures Tuesday. 

While most American political discourse remains preoccupied with the 2024 presidential election, voters in a handful of states headed to the polls Tuesday to elect governors, state legislators, mayors, city council members and other state and local elected offices. For the most part, Tuesday night’s election results resulted in Republicans winning races in Republican-leaning areas and Democrats emerging victorious in areas that favor Democrats.

However, there were a few surprises that caught political observers off-guard. News of Democrats narrowly winning control of the Virginia House of Delegates and keeping control of the Virginia Senate dominated headlines, as did the results of hotly contested ballot measures.
