Conservative Christian talk show host Pat Robertson recently raised eyebrows when he commented on the key to a successful marriage during a recent broadcast of "The 700 Club."

While Robertson suggested that it is the responsibility of both men and women to keep the romance alive in their marriage, he also suggested to women that they "fix [themselves] up, look pretty, look alert" to maintain the attention of their husband, as in some cases an "awful looking woman" may be the reason for a failed marriage.

Robertson's comments were made in response to a 17-year-old's letter sent to the program which questioned how he might help rekindle the romance between his mother and father, as his father seems more interested in playing video games than giving his wife enough attention.

Robertson suggested that the couple go on a romantic getaway for a few days to rekindle their romance.

"The romance has obviously gone out of their marriage; it's not as much excitement as it used to be," Robertson said on the Wednesday, Jan. 9 episode of "The 700 Club", the flagship program of the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN).

"It may be your mom isn't as sweet as you think she is, she may be kind of hard-nosed," Robertson continued.

The CBN chairman then proceeded to tell a story of an "awful looking" woman who once visited a preacher and asked for advice on her husband's drinking problem, to which the preacher responded: "Madame, if I was married to you I'd start to drink too."

Robertson concluded by saying that in a marriage, it is important for both men and women to work to keep the romance alive.

"You've got to fix yourself up, look pretty, look alert," Robertson advised married women.

Robertson's comments have drawn ire among some media outlets, who argue that Robertson is blaming failed marriages on the upkeep of women.

This isn't the first time Robertson has made controversial comments; for example, during the holiday season, the famed televangelist described atheists as "miserable grinches" trying to steal Christmas.
