Planned Parenthood Starts War: Women vs. Newt Gingrich

Planned Parenthood has developed a new action fund named Women Are Watching, which has drawn negative attention to Newt Gingrich’s stance on women’s health, amongst other things.

The newest blog is named, “Newt Gingrich: Newly Minted Featured Chump,” and charges that Gingrich “cast 74 votes on reproductive rights, and all but two of them were anti-women’s health - putting him on the wrong side of women’s health 97 percent of the time.”

The site also points to the Susan B. Anthony List, where Gingrich agreed to “select only pro-life appointees for relevant Cabinet and executive branch positions.”

In her book on The Republican War Against Women, Tanya Melich takes a different stance stating, “Gingrich and his allies have given women an opportunity for real power.”

She calls women an “integral part of Gingrich’s campaign.”

However users on the Planned Parenthood site disagree and offered harsh criticism of Gingrich. Meredith Thomas wrote, “You served your first wife with divorce papers while in a hospital recovering from cancer. Your current wife was your mistress during your second marriage, and you tried to get Clinton impeached while you were participating in a 6 year affair.”

Polls taken Dec. 1-5 also reveal that Gingrich has far higher support among men than women, with 43 percent of males saying they will support him, and only 30 percent of females.

Planned Parenthood’s strong view on Gingrich comes largely from his pro-life stance which conflicts with the organization’s mission statement that declares their belief in “the fundamental right of each individual, throughout the world, to manage his or her fertility” including the option of abortion.

Planned Parenthood has also been a source of controversy after coming under the investigation of U.S. Congress on issues concerning federal regulations on taxpayer funds and abortion practices.
