PlayStation App to Launch for iOS and Android

Sony announced yesterday during the unveiling of the PlayStation 4 that it will launch a special PlayStation app for both Android and iOS.

This special app will enable iPhone, iPad, and Android based smartphones and tablets to become second screens for the PlayStation 4. Players will be able to see extras from the PS4 games they're playing on these screens such as maps for an adventure game.

Users will also be able to purchase PS4 games with the app when they are away from their system and have them download directly to the console.

These "second screens" will also be available on the PlayStation Vita which will also have the ability to access a new feature called "Remote Play." This allows PlayStation 4 players to continue their game on the handheld's 5-inch HD screen.

During yesterday's PS4 Keynote, game developer Evolution Studios stated that its new game "Drive Club" will have a second screen that will be available on Android tablets.

Microsoft launched an Xbox app that allows users to view other friends' stats, and manage and edit their own profiles. It is unclear whether the PlayStation app will have these same features available.

The PlayStation app is expected to launch sometime around this holiday season, which is the same time the new PS4 will be released.

Sony unveiled the PlayStation 4 yesterday, however, the company did not allow the public to actually see the physical console.

The new system is powered by an eight-core X86 AMD "Jaguar" CPU and a 1.84 Teraflop AMD Radeon graphics engine. It also has 8GB of GDDR5 memory and will use a hard drive for storage instead of SSD.

Like the PS3, the PS4 will have a Blu-ray drive that can also play DVDs and will be backwards compatible with PS3 games, and eventually will be able to play PS and PS2 titles, according to Sony.
