PS4 News: Console to Be in High Demand

GameStop has some good news for Sony as the retailer feels the PS4 will be in high demand when it launches.

Tony Bartel, the president of GameStop, has stated that there is strong purchase intent for the PS4 based on the fact that 900,000 of the retailer's customers have already signed up for early information on the console, according to a report from Games Industry International.

He also stated that GameStop believes demand will far outpace supply within the launch window. 34 percent of people queried by the GameStop's consumer research expect to purchase a PS4 in the coming year, according to the site. The interest for the Sony console is higher than any other hardware at this point.

Games for the PS3 could cost as much as $70, according to Wedbush Securities Research Analyst Michael Pachter.

Pachter offered the information during a panel at SXSWm, saying that games for both the new Xbox and PS4 will cost $10 more than those on the PS3 and Xbox 360.

Sony recently clarified pricing for PS4 games when SCEA President and CEO Jack Tretton explained that Sony "will offer games with prices ranging from $0.99 to the more traditional $60 range with the ability for players to sample games before they buy."

Tretton never gives a hard number leaving the possibility for Sony to charge past the $60 mark, according to IGN.

Sony unveiled the PlayStation 4 gaming console on Feb. 20 of this year.

The new system is powered by an eight-core X86 AMD "Jaguar" CPU and a 1.84 Teraflop AMD Radeon graphics engine. It also has 8GB of GDDR5 memory and will use a hard drive for storage instead of SSD.

Like the PS3, the PS4 will have a Blu-ray drive that can also play DVDs and will be backwards compatible with PS3 games, and eventually will be able to play PS and PS2 titles, according to Sony.
