Rihanna Shares Proverb on Instagram; Fans Debate Singer's Spirituality

Rihanna, 24-year-old Barbadian recording artist, has been sharing passages from the Holy Bible with her Instagram followers recently and decided to dedicate a particular verse to her critics on Tuesday.

The singer tweeted a passage from Christian minister Joyce Meyer's "Starting Your Day Right" devotional book on Instagram Tuesday, while tweeting the caption "love your critics."

The message that Rihanna shared from Meyer's book on Tuesday came from Proverbs 10:17 where it states, "He who heeds instruction and correction is (not only himself) in the way of life (but also) is a way of life for others."

In the message that talks about appreciating people's correction, the singer seemed to highlight a few lines.

"Love your critics," the underlined portion read. "Self-discipline is the mark of maturity."

The singer used different colors to highlight other portions of Meyer's explanation of the Scripture.

"If you want to be free to truly enjoy your life...face the truth. You cannot be free if you make excuses," the underlined portion reads. "Everyone has weaknesses…trust Him to be strong in that area in your behalf."

The message shared on Rihanna's Instagram account comes one day after she shared another passage of Scripture, Isaiah 26:3, that is thoroughly explained in Meyer's book. After the singer shared the passage with her followers on Instagram Tuesday, many of them began to debate her spirituality.

"Rihanna I love how you keep posting stuff like this, it's very inspirational," one person wrote.

However, another questioned the singer's decision to post Scriptures on her Twitter page where she also features pictures of herself drinking, smoking and partying.

"Honestly I really don't care about Rihanna. I'm just saying don't be posting piks of urself being wreck less and then be posting bible verses like ur all Godly when it's obvi that ur not (SIC)," the person commented on the singer's photograph of the Scripture. "It's contradictory and it's not giving a good example straight up that's how I feel, don't be posting piks like that and not expect people to say (expletive)!"

While many of Rihanna's followers responded to the critical posting with an "amen," others defended the singer.

"No one's sins are bigger than the other. She's young and she has to answer to [no] one but God Himself," Rihanna's online defender commented on her posting. "In that case Rihanna I support you through your struggles and your success. I know just how you feel as a human just trying to live."

The singer seemed to foreshadow her sharing of Meyer's daily devotionals on Twitter a few months ago, calling the minister "awesome" and suggesting that her fans read her works.

When one of Rihanna's fans tweeted about Meyer being "one of the few with the non-corny quotes on Twitter," in June the singer retweeted the message and gave the person some advice.

"Get into her books," Rihanna told the fan.

This month, the singer has been helping her fans do just that by Instagraming photographs from pages in Meyer's book.
