Samsung Galaxy Note 8 to Launch in Charcoal Black

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 will be released in Charcoal Black.

A picture of the device in this color leaked this week. Samsung unveiled the Note 8 at last week's Mobile World Congress in White Marble.

This smartphone-tablet hybrid is being launched by Samsung to compete with Apple's wildly successful iPad Mini, which is around the same size. One of the main selling points of the Galaxy Note 8 is its S Pen stylus accessory, which can also be found on the original Galaxy Note and Note 2. Samsung releases custom made applications that work specifically with the S Pen.

The Note 8 sports an 8-inch display with 1280 x 800 pixels resolution and 189 ppi. This is a bit higher than Apple's iPad Mini's screen, which has 163 ppi.

Other specifications on the device include a 1.6GHz quad-core A9 processor, 2GB RAM, and special features such as Smart Stay that allows the tablet to recognize if the owner is still awake. This will make it automatically go on standby once the owner falls asleep or stops using it. It is said to be seamless and very responsive.

The iPad Mini has been extremely successful for Apple, who launched the tablet towards the end of last year. It is currently outselling the full-sized iPad in markets throughout the world.

A recent NPD report shows that shipments of tablets that are between 7 and 9 inches surpassed the shipments of those with larger panels in January 2013, pointing to a general change in preference for consumers when it comes to the size of their slate.

Shipments of the full-sized iPad fell from 7.4 million in December to 1.3 million in January, while shipments of the iPad Mini rose to over 5 million. 7-inch tablets such as the Kindle Fire and Google Nexus also saw a significant sales increase in January, rising to around 14 million.

NPD predicted in Dec. that Apple would sell 40 million iPad Minis and 60 million iPads in 2013, however, based on this new data, it seems that iPad Mini will end up outselling the iPad by the end of the year.
