Selena Gomez Ignores Taylor Swift's Objections to Justin Bieber? 'You Can't Help Who You Date'

Selena Gomez has refused to pay any attention to critics who oppose her on-and-off relationship with Justin Bieber.

The former Disney star, 20, recently spoke candidly about her relationship with Bieber, 19, following their April split. The pair is rumored to have reconciled on July 4 and while critics like Gomez's best friend, Taylor Swift, are objecting to a rekindled romance the singer is focused on following her heart.

"It's uncomfortable that everywhere I go, people know. I don't like that. But Justin and I never really focused on the attention," Gomez told InStyle magazine in May about her relationship with Bieber.

"You can't help who you date," she said in response to her critics. "So I wouldn't swear off that or say that's what I want again. I don't know. I'm a kid, and a breakup is normal. I have to go through the emotions and feel it out. I'm doing my own thing, being with my friends, and he's doing very well too."

In April the Hollywood couple was rumored to be back together after the "Boyfriend" singer shared a kissing photo on Twitter. On May 19, Gomez was spotted kissing the pop star backstage at the Billboard Music awards, which fueled reports of a reconciliation.

A source claimed at the time that despite their past troubles, Gomez had given Bieber another chance although she made sure to warn him against ever hurting her ever again.

"Selena is keeping her heart from being broken so she is definitely looking at this as a trial period in their relationship," a source told HollywoodLife.com on May 27.

"She has told him that if he f---- with her emotions too much, she will drop him," the source explained.

Swift, who turned away in disgust after seeing Gomez kiss Bieber at the Billboard awards, was reportedly disappointed after the pair shared an intimate photo online after spending July 4 together. The country singer was reportedly fearful that the photo may signify yet another reconciliation.

"Taylor absolutely hates the fact that Selena and Justin are hanging out again and looking like they are getting back together," a source said.

"She feels she is going to get hurt and run back to Taylor when things get bad again. She is ready to say, 'I told you so,'" the source explained.

Meanwhile on Tuesday a source revealed that Gomez and Bieber, who have dated on-and-off for two years, were working on a friendship.

"They are trying to maintain a friendship," a source told E! News.
