'Sex Not X-Rated, But God Created,' Says 'Sexperiment Pastor

“Sexperiment” Pastor Ed Young and wife, Lisa, have spent 24 hours on their Grapevine, Texas church roof – in bed – an initiative to bring “the bed back into the church.” According to the couple, the live-streamed event from Fellowship Church was a push for marital peace, with Young emphasizing that “sex is not ‘x’ rated, it’s God created.”

The couple's book, Sexperiment: 7 Days to Lasting Intimacy with Your Spouse, was released Jan. 10 and is about understanding and healing. Sexperiment also deals with intimacy and sex, challenging “everyone to understand that God wants us to begin a sexual revolution,” the Youngs shared Friday.

“It’s vital that we put on relational sunblock. We have to expose ourselves to the right relationships,” Pastor Young stated. “Even in marriage. If we don’t block out those harmful rays we could get relational melanoma.”

He revealed that the concept for the book was born from an article, which talked about sexless marriages and couples who decided to have sex for seven days straight. The seven-day sex proposition had received a standing ovation from his married male congregants when it was introduced several years ago, the founding pastor of the Grapevine, Texas, church relayed.

Mrs. Young added that she received an overwhelming response from women as well. Even those who were skeptical at first were eventually convinced. She shared that one congregation member had sent her a letter apologizing for “doubting her pastors.”

“This was about the truth,” Mrs. Young said. “People want to know the real story on sex. The first place to get it is the home, the second place [is] the church.”

“Rather than call it a stunt we’d like to call it a statement,” she added. “Culture is throwing so many statements of what sex should be, that we want to send a message about what sex [is].”

The Youngs were speaking from a bed on their church roof from Friday morning until Saturday morning. They streamed the entire 24-hour “bed-in” live on the Web as they discussed the “tantalizing truths about sex as God intended.”

Pastor Young pointed out that because today’s “culture” had hijacked sex there was a need for a sexual revolution. “God’s revolution, the change for the better – it’s pure, raw, and real.”

“We’re talking about all the beautiful things that surround marriage,” his wife stated. “The bottom line is couples, especially those with children, desire more intimacy. We’re talking about doing it and doing it right.”

According to the Youngs, a couple’s bedroom is a sanctuary and that is something children must be taught. Lisa revealed that their children never slept with them, the only exception was if they were sick.

In addition to various interviews they did with media and with other pastors, the couple also answered questions from viewers during the live streaming – offering advice on everything from how women could start a conversation of sex to coping with an adulterous spouse.

“There’s nothing on this earth that’s too devastating for us to forgive,” Mrs. Young offered. “That’s the whole sacrifice of what Christ gave on the cross.”

However, she warned that there was no reason to ever commit adultery but both parties should look to the circumstances that may have led to this break of trust. She added, “There are deep cuts that people have, but God has a [powerful] way of bringing us back together.”

According to Pastor Young, sex inside a marriage is an act of worship, whether one, both, or neither person was a virgin. “When someone makes the decision to get right with God and you’re doing marriage God’s way then it’s still an act of worship.”

However, “if you take sex out of context then you’re wasting your worship,” he said. “You’re having small sex instead of big sex. When I say big sex I mean to realize the multifaceted [aspect of it].”

The pastor pointed out that Sexperiment was also for singles. “How you act before the marriage will alter how you [are] after,” he insisted.

The Youngs have been married for 29 years and have four children.
