Social Conservative Coalition on Michigan Bus Tour Supporting Santorum

A coalition of social conservative advocacy groups is on a six-day bus tour through Michigan to build support for presidential candidate Rick Santorum.

"As the campaign was unfolding, we realized that, while the presidential candidates were all pro-life, Rick Santorum had the distinction of being a proven leader who is very courageous," Marilyn Musgrave, former Colorado congresswoman and vice president of Susan B. Anthony List, told CP.

The SBA List board met earlier in the week and voted unanimously to support Santorum.

The tour, which includes Campaign for Working Families, Culture War Victory Fund and Catholic Vote, began in Grand Rapids on Thursday and will end in Mount Pleasant on Tuesday, the day of Michigan's primary.

SBA List is also spending $150,000 on an ad that will run on Michigan radio stations. The ad notes that Santorum signed the SBA List pro-life pledge, but rival Mitt Romney did not. It also praises Santorum's work on pro-life causes while representing Pennsylvania in the U.S. Senate.

Rick Santorum led the fight in the Senate against partial birth abortion. Not because it was easy, but because it was right, the ad states.

Musgrave said they chose Michigan because they think Santorum has a very good chance to win there. She also believes, though, that Santorum will do better than expected in the Arizona primary, which will be the same day as Michigan's primary.

A Rasmussen Reports poll of 750 likely Republican voters in Michigan on Thursday shows Romney leading Santorum, 40 to 34 percent. The margin of error is plus or minus four percentage points.
