The Allure of 'Little' Sins

Can you and I take a little walk and discuss some spiritual matters for a few minutes? I promise not to keep you too long. I would like to touch base with you today about God and Satan.

When you think of “satanic activity,” you might think about teenagers in a forest in the middle of the night sacrificing animals and chanting their allegiance to the prince of demons. In reality, it hits a lot closer to home than that brazen form of devil worship. There is actually a ton of satanic activity going on all around us everyday. You may have no clue about how many ways you are inadvertently partnering with Beelzebub to help him accomplish his sadistic goals.

You see….every choice we make between something good and something evil is like choosing between taking a walk with Jesus along the beach vs. taking a walk with Satan. Would you ever consider taking a walk in the park with Satan himself? What if the two of you were to hold hands as you walked and he were to dazzle you with his astounding intelligence? Satan is a master of disguise and deception. Would you ever want to spend an hour with him just walking and talking and holding hands?

I’m guessing you would say, “No, I would never want to walk with Satan, even for a few minutes.” That would be wise of you my friend to feel that way. However, when was the last time you were confronted with the temptation to hold a grudge, dwell on a lustful thought, cling to hate in your heart, or gossip about someone? Do you realize that in the midst of that temptation, Satan was holding out his hand to you and whispering, “Come this way. Let’s spend a little time together.”

When we choose to entertain our sinful thoughts or to engage in sinful activities, we are in essence reaching out our hand and embracing the hand of Satan himself. How smart is it for us to think that a short walk with Satan is going to lead somewhere good? Why do we as believers sometimes get duped into thinking that we can find peace and fulfillment by “taking a break” from a full-time relationship with Jesus Christ?

A double-minded man or woman is one who is attempting to walk with both Jesus and Satan. Something has got to give. You will end up loving the Lord and despising the other, or walking away from the Lord and following the lustful agenda of the other. Satan’s temptations are ALWAYS progressive. He asks you at first for just a little of your time…..and then a little more…..and so it goes. Many of our daily decisions connect us to one of two camps. The decision will either strengthen our connection with Jesus, or it will establish a point of contact with Satan. One path leads to everlasting life in heaven; the other path leads to eternal punishment in hell.

The next time you are tempted to think that it is not very harmful to give in to sin just a little bit, ask yourself this critical question: Who whispered in my ear and convinced me that there is such a thing as a LITTLE sin? It is tragic to see how little sins turn into big chains and how a walk in the park turns into a spiritual kidnapping. What would you call it when a ‘victim’ willfully strays off the path to a hidden place with a kidnapper? Seduction, spiritual insanity, sinful stupidity…..take your pick…..whatever you call it, please be careful that you don’t end up experiencing it firsthand like so many others who have been dragged away by a fallen angel they trusted for a little while.

If it didn’t look incredibly appealing at first, no one would ever take the bait? Remember….Satan has been doing this for thousands of years. The more victims he drags away, the more he improves his methods. He is a predator like none other with a payoff that keeps on giving. Those who turn away from the Lord find that the alternative to God’s plan is a date with a supernatural serial killer of whom Jesus said, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.” (John 10:10)

But enough of that for now…..let’s get back to the "real world." It really is a nice day for a walk, isn’t it? So what do you think…..should we do the beach, or the park?
