Jonathan Edwards gets married - July 28, 1727

This week marks the anniversary of when famed American Protestant minister Jonathan Edwards married Sarah Pierrepont, a woman from a distinguished family based in Connecticut.

Edwards was 24 at the time of the wedding, while Pierrepont was 17. In the early eighteenth century, it was common for women to be married off in the teenage years.

The couple had eleven children, all of whom lived to at least adolescent years in an age that had a fairly high child and infant mortality rate.

“Felt wonderful satisfaction in being at the house of Mr. Edwards. He is a Son himself, and hath also a Daughter of Abraham for his wife. A sweeter couple I have not yet seen,” remarked George Whitefield, another famed preacher of the time.
