5. Department of Justice announces arrest of MS-13 leader

In a press conference Thursday, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi announced that "one of the top leaders of MS-13 was apprehended" earlier in the day. While Bondi and the other state and federal officials who spoke at the press conference did not identify the individual by name, she stressed that "He was the leader for the East Coast, one of the top three in the entire country."

Bondi indicated that the arrest of the gang leader took place in Virginia, identifying him as "an illegal alien from El Salvador" and vowing that "He will not be living in our country much longer." Virginia's Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin later clarified that the gang leader was captured in Dale City, located in the suburbs of Washington, D.C.

Bondi praised the "joint effort with state and local agencies" that resulted in the MS-13 leader's capture. She proclaimed that "America is safer today because of one of the top domestic terrorists in MS-13, he is off the streets."

Erik Siebert, the interim U.S. attorney for the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, cited the MS-13 leader's arrest as part of a "Homeland Security Task Force" that combines "federal, state and local resources to identify and arrest the most violent gang offenders in the Eastern District of Virginia." According to Siebert, since the task force was launched on March 3, "We have identified 575 targets, we've arrested 342 of those targets, many of them with illegal status."

"And of the 342 arrested, we've identified 81 individuals with gang or transnational crime affiliation," he added.
