William and Kate First Meeting Not at St. Andrews, New Author Says

Most people believe that Kate Middleton and husband Prince William met at St. Andrews University, became friends and later started dating. But biographer Katie Nicholl has revealed that the two actually met a few years earlier, through mutual friends.

"That was really fascinating for me," Nicholl told Katie Couric. "I was speaking to some of her friends at Marlborough School, which was where she went before St. Andrews, and they said, 'Uh uh, she didn't meet him at St. Andrews. She met him before she got there… through some of her friends. They knew Prince William and Prince Harry."

Middleton had her heart set on attending Edinburgh for studies but at the last minute decided to take a gap year instead and then apply to St. Andrews.

"It was a big risk – applicants to St. Andrews had shot up by nearly 50 percent when the Palace announced that Prince William was going there," Nicholl wrote in her book, "Kate: The Future Queen."

Kate and William's paths crossed again while at University and they began hanging out as friends. After a couple of years they moved in together but broke up in 2007 after dating for four years.

"When his father Charles was wooing Diana and the relationship reached a crossroads, Prince Philip told him that he needed to take action one way or another. And Charles proposed. When William was faced with a similar dilemma, he went the other way," Marcia Moody reveals in her book "Kate."

The separation apparently made William realize how much he actually loved Kate and saw his father's missed opportunity to marry the love of his life, Camilla.

"We were both finding ourselves and being different characters. It was very much trying to find our own way and we were growing up so it was just a bit of space and it worked out for the better," William is quoted as saying.

They did get back together and married in 2011. The couple welcomed their first child, Prince George, in July of this year.
