Buying the Titanic

You can own Titanic. Not just the movie, but the real thing – the ship and all that's been recovered from it so far. Since the wreckage was discovered in 1985, more than 5,000 artifacts have been recovered – everything from spectacles to a 17-ton hunk of the hull. Now the entire collection, valued at $189 million, is for sale.

Here's the catch: you have to buy all of it. You are then responsible for the submerged wreckage as well. You must keep some of the collection on public display at all times. And you agree to preserve the collection and the ship's remains at the bottom of the Atlantic for future generations.

Titanic is not the only investment option in this morning's news. According to Reuters, stock markets are set for a higher open after U.S. employment rose last month. And Samsung reports record profits for the fourth quarter, driven by smartphone sales. However, Barnes & Noble warns that it will lose twice as much money this fiscal year as previously expected. And Kodak is apparently on the verge of bankruptcy, a fact that may deter your financial enthusiasm.

I could list more options, all of which would be uncertain. If there were an investment that came with an absolute guarantee, would you consider it? Here's Jesus' financial advice: "Store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal" (Matthew 6:20). What we invest in God's Kingdom draws a return today and forever. Every dollar we give to him is used by his Spirit to draw souls to Christ. And our financial commitments affect and reveal our spiritual health: "Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" (v. 21).

I am deeply grateful for every donor who has chosen to "store up treasures in heaven" by investing in God's Kingdom through our ministry. Like all non-profits, we depend greatly on the year-end gifts of our supporters. Your generosity enables us to begin the year well. And many of you gave during the year in 2011--as you continue your financial support and intercession, you partner with us in speaking God's word to the issues of our day. And you make it possible for us to provide spiritual resources to churches and ministries around the world.

I thank you for the privilege of sharing these morning essays with you, and for your support of our work. As you and I give our lives and resources to God this year, we will see a return guaranteed for eternity. Is there a wiser investment?
