When ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” introduced the 42-year-old ahead of the season, the show’s audience expressed mixed reactions. The controversial decision to add Bono stemmed from a gender change that the star underwent after coming out as a lesbian in 1995.

Meanwhile, many fans of the show, especially those in the LBGT community, have lauded Bono’s addition to the cast.

As the only child of the famous duo Sonny and Cher, audience members questioned Bono’s “celebrity” status and commented on his weight.

ABC’s online message board saw concerns over transgendered contestants, with viewers often citing that children may become confused by Bono’s presence, and that such cast members were inappropriate on a family oriented show.

In response to the embittered viewers, Bono’s mother, Cher, tweeted: “This is still America right? I support him no matter what he chooses 2do!”

Cher also tweeted: “God! Will there always be haters! It took COURAGE 2 do dwts! TG Chaz has an UNLIMITED supply.”

The 65-year-old performer and singer also wrote on her twitter account: “Mothers don’t stop Getting angry with stupid bigots who [mess] with their children!”

The remaining six couples on “Dancing with the Stars” will perform again Monday on ABC at 8 p.m. EST.
