Ice Cream Sandwich Release Date: No Update for Nexus One, iPhone 3GS Gets iOS 5

Consumers are upset that the HTC Nexus One will not be receiving an operating system update from Android 2.3 Gingerbread to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Google's Product Management Director for Android Hugo Barra announced on Oct. 26 that Nexus One is too old to receive an update.

Barra detailed that the 1 GHz Scorpion processor that powers the Nexus One is too slow to run Ice Cream Sandwich.

The announcement has left many in the online tech community puzzled, since Google representatives had previously stated that any Gingerbread powered phone has the potential to run Ice Cream Sandwich.

Thinq.co.uk, a technology website, said that Android users are getting "short-changed" by the fact that the Nexus One will not receive an Ice Cream Sandwich update since Apple's two-generation-old iPhone 3G has not only received an update to the new iOS 5, but is now free with contract on AT&T.

The Nexus One sells for $179 with a two-year contract on AT&T and T-Mobile.

The iPhone 3GS is also older than the Nexus one, having been released in June 2009 while the Nexus One was released in January 2010.

A number of Android smartphones are expected to receive Ice Cream Sandwich updates, including the Google Nexus S, the Samsung Galaxy S2, the Motorola Razr and the Droid Bionic.

Developer dr1337md uploaded a video on YouTube demonstrating his progress at porting Ice Cream Sandwich onto the Nexus One on Oct. 24.
