Katy Perry Raised to Believe Divorce Is Wrong

According to sources close to Katy Perry, the singer has attempted to protect her Evangelical parents from the devastating news of her divorce from Russell Brand.

TMZ reported that Perry wanted Brand to file the divorce papers in the Los Angeles court Friday because she didn’t want to upset her religious parents who instilled in her that divorce was wrong.

Although the 27-year-old singer agreed to the divorce, Perry did not want to be the one to “officially” end the marriage by filing the proper documents.

The U.K.’s newspaper The Sun reported another source close to Perry who said that the singer was “embarrassed” to tell her parents about the divorce.

“Katy was embarrassed about calling her parents as they’d been so against Russell in the first place,” said the insider, who added that Perry was consoled by her good friend and fellow singer Rihanna.

Perry and Brand wed in a traditional Hindu ceremony in 2010, and after 14 months of marriage, the British comedian filed the papers in Los Angeles on Friday.

“Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage,” said Brand in a statement to The Associated Press. “I’ll always adore her and I know we’ll remain friends.”

London’s Daily Star reported Brand in positive spirits after the news broke. He told reporters, “I’m doing good. Everything is going to be better next year.”

Little is known about the reasons behind their split, but the insider speaking to TMZ said, “It just wasn’t there,” of Brand and Perry’s relationship. Previous reports indicated that the pair differed greatly when it came to religion.

In a past interview with Vanity Fair, Perry described the differences between her religious background and Brand’s. “I come from a very non-accepting family, but I’m very accepting,” said the singer. “Russell is into Hinduism, and I’m not [really] involved in it.”

Last spring, Brand contributed a piece to an edition of the New Statesman on the existence of God. Brand wrote, “Through Transcendental Meditation, twice daily I feel the bliss of the divine. Through the mental repetition of a mantra, eventually my chattering monkey mind recedes, gently banishing the concerns of the past and drawing the inner eye away from speculation and want.”

Continuing in article for the consumer website, the 36-year-old wrote, “I connect to a boundless consciousness that has no palpable relationship with my thoughts, fears or desires.”

Perry and Brand’s divorce may cost Perry, with Forbes estimating her to be worth at least $44 million and reports indicating the couple did not sign a prenuptial agreement.
